HAT CARE TIPS

Keep Your Hat Clean

THANKS for purchasing a FIVE21 hat. Here are a few hat care tips to help you keep your hat looking fresh.

FIVE21 Flexfit hats are easy to wash and care for. Our hats are very durable and can handle hand washing or machine wash in cold water. DO NOT use bleach even on white hats because bleaching can damage the hat’s fabric fibers. Using cold or warm water, a gentle wash cycle and mild detergent is suggested. Always air dry your hat as the heat level in a dryer is too hot. Tumbling isn’t good and can distort the hats shape. Allow your hat to dry on a large can or another head shaped container.

Because of the aforementioned concerns most people prefer to just avoid the laundry machines altogether. Hand washing is probably the best way to care for your hat. Fill a bucket or sink with cold or warm water and start your cleaning process. Today’s hat are made of better materials and can survive being full submersed in water.

There are several hat cleaning kits on the market. Most of the kits contain a soft bristle brush and cleaning solution. Using laundry detergent or even Oxiclean is also an option.  Be sure to use a soft bristle brush. A stiff bristle brush can damage your hat’s fabric. Can’t find a soft bristle brush? Run down to the $1 store and grab a new toothbrush!

Hat Care Tips

Lets look at a few tips for taking care of your FIVE21 Hat

This one is important! Soon as you receive your hat protect it with a water and stain repellent. Water and stain repellant products help water bead up and roll right off your cap. It also repels dirt and sweat from absorbing into your hat.

When you are ready to give your hat a bath take note of the material. If your cap is wool it’s best to dry clean it. Wool hats can shrink some in water or even sweat. Most cotton, polyester and cotton/polyester blends can withstand a hand washing or washing in the dishwasher or washing machine.

Hat Washing Methods

Washing your hat by hand.

This is probably one of the most popular and safest ways to clean your hat. To begin the hand washing process spot clean first. Spray your dirty hat with your cap cleaner or stain remover. Let cap sit for 10-15 minutes. Next, wet your cap with water and gently scrub with a clean dry sponge or soft bristle brush. If hat needs more cleaning fill a bucket with cold or warm water. Dissolve laundry detergent in water. Any laundry detergent will do although Oxiclean is preferred by some. Submerge hat in water and scrub hat with brush until clean. Rinse thoroughly. Reform hat to its natural shape and let air dry. Placing hat on a head shaped container or object helps cap to keep its form.

DO NOT use dish washing detergent! Dish washing liquid is made for pots and pans not fabric. Spot cleaning your hat before placing it in the washer can help lift dirt. When you place your hat in the dishwasher use a hat washer like the Ball Cap Buddy to help your hat keep its shape while machine washing. Do not wash along with dirty dishes. After wash cycle remove hat and let air dry. This seems to be one of the more popular methods for hat washing but remember water temperatures can get very hot in a dish washer leading to hat damage or shrinkage.

Washing your hat in a washing machine on a delicate cycle.

Gentle laundry detergent can help get out difficult stains (like Woolite), but always test for colorfast. Do a spot test before placing hat in washing machine. Tumbling is bad for you hat so try to avoid front loading washers. Pay attention to the water temperature because hot water can shrink your hat so be sure to wash on cold or warm water cycles.  Remove hat after washing, reform and let air dry. Once again a hat washer or Ballcap Buddy will help your hat keep its shape during washing.
